Overview

This dataset includes over 700 thousands occupational and professional licenses issued by Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL). The Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) is responsible for licensing and regulating over 40 types of occupational and health professioinals. Each licensee is registered with license number, licensee name, facility name, license type, business location, license issue date and status, etc.

Dataset Details

The Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) is responsible for licensing and regulating over 700,000 individuals who are regulated by either the Michigan Occupational Code or the Public Health Code. BPL is also responsible for maintaining the Health Professional Recovery Program (HPRP) and the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS). The mission of the Bureau of Professional Licensing is to protect, preserve and improve the health, safety and welfare of Michigan's citizens through the licensing and regulation of occupational and health professionals. The Bureau is designed to make the regulatory system simple, fair and efficient.

The following professions are regulated: Accountancy, Acupuncture, Applied Behavior Analysis, Appraisal Management Company, Architect, Athletic Training, Audiology, Barbers, Chiropractic, Collection Practices, Cosmetology, Counseling, Dentistry, Genetic Counseling, Hearing Aid Dealers, Landscape Architects, Marriage & Family Therapy, Massage Therapy, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Nursing Home Administrators, Occupational Therapists, Optometry, Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery, Personnel Agency, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician’s Assistant, Podiatric Medicine & Surgery, Professional Engineer, Professional Surveyor, Psychology, Real Estate Appraisers, Real Estate Brokers/Salesperson, Respiratory Care, Sanitarians, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology, and Veterinary Medicine.

This dataset includes currently licensed professionals in Michigan. The information for each licensee includes license number, licensee name, facility name, profession, license type, specilties, business location, license issue date, expiration date and status, displinary actions, etc.

The Michigan's Open Data Portal provides a way to view and analyze data provided by a variety of Michigan state agencies in one easy to view catalog, create charts and graphs, filter and summarize data, and develop maps with the open data.

Statistics

The most common license type of Michigan regulated professions are Registered Nurse (23.13%), Controlled Substance (10.86%), Cosmetologist (9.23%), Salesperson (5.44%), Medical Doctor (4.85%), Licensed Practical Nurse (2.93%), Professional Engineer (2.86%), Pharmacy Technician (2.56%), Masters Social Worker (2.52%), and Pharmacist (2.32%). While a majority of professionals are located in Michigan (83.62%), there are also significant number of licensees in the following states: Ohio (1.63%), Florida (1.39%), Illinois (1.02%), Texas (0.99%), Indiana (0.80%), California (0.70%), and Wisconsin (0.61%). The most pupular cities of Michigan licensees are Grand Rapids (3.37%), Ann Arbor (2.76%), Detroit (2.64%), Kalamazoo (1.38%), Troy (1.22%), Sterling Heights (1.20%), Canton (1.13%), Livonia (1.13%), Lansing (1.11%), and Dearborn (1.09%). The total number of licensed professionals increased sharply in 2019 by 86%, due to the needs of health professionals during the pandemic. In 2021 and 2022, the number of licensees continued growth with a rate higher than the pre-pandemic level, largely attributed to new market opportunities created by the pandemic. We expect to see more professionals being licensed in the upcoming years.
